In April 1994, the ANC won South Africa's first non-racial general election. On May 9, Mandela became the first black president in South Africa's history after the results of South Africa's first multi-racial election were announced.
In December 1997, Mandela resigned as president of the ANC and said he would no longer run for president in June 1999. [4]
On March 12, 1999, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Leiden University, a famous European university. In May, President Mandela was invited to visit China. He was the first South African head of state to visit China. Officially resigned in June.
